(Cleveland) – For the third consecutive year, the Judges on the Cleveland Municipal Court have chosen the Honorable Michelle D. Earley as Administrative and Presiding Judge.
“It’s certainly an honor to be selected by my peers to take this Court into the next decade,” said Judge Earley who joined the bench in 2009.
Under her leadership, the Court created the Pretrial Services Department, the first new department in 23 years. Pretrial services, in conjunction with the Court’s use of a risk assessment tool, are critical to assisting the Court in making prompt, fair and effective release or detention decisions.
“The Court continues to make strides to improve the fairness and cost-effectiveness of the criminal justice system, increase public safety and reduce recidivism,” said Judge Earley
Looking ahead to 2020, Judge Earley, who came to the court with a strong background in technology, is preparing the Court for the initial phase of the implementation of a new case management system that will enhance new technologies and provide a more efficient system of justice.
The Cleveland Municipal Court has jurisdiction in misdemeanor cases where the maximum sentence does not exceed one year in jail and/or a fine of not more than $1,000, the initial appearances of those charged with felony offenses committed within its jurisdiction, small claims not exceeding $6,000 and civil disputes that can range as high as $15,000.
