Random Case Assignment
In the fall of 1974 the court’s Data Processing Department and the Assignment Room were consolidated and converted into the Central Scheduling Department. The primary function of the department is to apportion among the judges most misdemeanor cases and all civil cases ready for trial. The department maintains a hybrid master calendar/personal docket system and submits monthly reports to the Ohio Supreme Court.
Criminal cases are individually assigned when a plea of not guilty is entered. The crucial feature of this individual assignment system is that cases are assigned randomly to judges who are responsible for overseeing the case through to its termination.
