Domestic Intervention Education & Training (D.I.E.T.)

The Domestic Intervention, Education and Training Program (DIET) began in 2006 with grant funding from the State of Ohio’s Department of Rehabilitation and Correction for local community sanction activities. The program was developed, and is operated, by the Probation Department with the objective of diverting 300 offenders charged with domestic violence related offenses to participate in a cognitive behavioral program in lieu of incarceration. DIET offenders must attend one, two-hour session per week with the number of sessions mandated based on risk of recidivism. Each session, which averages 15 participants, is being led by two qualified staff facilitators.  The curriculum was developed to support agencies' efforts to incorporate evidence based practices and strategies, improve public safety and reduce recidivism.  The curriculum targets criminogenic need areas for interpersonal abuse and includes activities for cognitive, social and emotional skill development.

The DIET program also serves the Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas and 12 suburban municipal courts, including Bedford; Berea; Cleveland Heights; East Cleveland; Euclid; Garfield Heights; Lakewood; Lyndhurst; Parma; Rocky River; Shaker Heights and South Euclid.

In August 2009, the DIET program commenced an innovative component, the DIET Support group; The Support Group is an assembly of successful graduates that meet on the third Monday of each month. A facilitator monitors the group, but primary direction of the meeting comes from the graduates. Issues discussed include successful implementation of safety plans and what constitutes a healthy relationship. Incentives such as note pads or coffee mugs are given to encourage participation.
