Whitney M. Young Wins 2012 Cleveland Mock Trial

The 16th Annual Cleveland Municipal Court Mock Trial Competition, sponsored by the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association Foundation, took place Friday, April 27th at the Justice Center.

The 16th Annual Cleveland Municipal Court Mock Trial Competition, sponsored by the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association Foundation, took place Friday, April 27th at the Justice Center.  Fourteen teams from ten Cleveland High Schools participated, arguing the prosecution and defense of a case involving an Iraqi War veteran with mental disabilities, who gets involved in a complicated legal dispute arising from an Occupy Cleveland protest.  The case was written by Cleveland Municipal Judge Lauren C. Moore, who oversees the Mock Trial Program.
 
A team of ninth graders from Whitney M. Young High School won first place.  Cleveland School of the Arts #1 team won second place and Cleveland School of the Arts #2 team finished third.

The white cylinder in the center of the photo is a time capsule. The Cleveland Municipal Court is celebrating its centennial this year and in doing so, the Court is collecting bits and piece of information to place in the capsule, which will be opened in 2112, 100 years from now.  A program listing the winners of the 2012 Mock Trial will go into the time capsule.
