(Cleveland) – For the second year in a row, a team of students at John Hay High School clearly stood out at the annual Cleveland Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the Cleveland Municipal Court and the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Foundation.

Over 450 students from 12 schools participated in 12 courtrooms at the Justice Center, Friday, April 24, 2015.  John Hay Cleveland School of Science and Medicine came in first, John Hay Early College was second and Whitney Young’s Team #2 came in third.  Finishing fourth was Team Justice from John Hay Early College, followed by Cleveland School of the Arts Team D and JFK was sixth.

The amount of participation in this year’s case was the largest in the 19 year history of the Cleveland Mock Trial Program.  Judge Lauren C. Moore, who has been in charge of the program over the last ten years, attributes much of that to the nature of the case, which involved a school security guard being charged with attempted murder after he shot what he thought to be a student armed with a weapon.

“We wanted the students to get engaged in what is currently happening in our community and around the country.  Without question, they responded,” said Judge Moore.

The competition was judged by members of the bar association and court staff, led by Cleveland Municipal Court Judge(s) Lauren Moore, Marilyn Cassidy, James Hewitt III and Ed Wade.

“We congratulate all the people who made this day such a success and we’re already looking forward to next year,” said Jessica Paine, Assistant Director of Community Programs and Information for the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association.
